Compare Legal Document Services

What each one actually charges, and what you get for it

Online legal services look interchangeable from the outside. They are not. They use three different pricing models and two very different ways of producing a document, and picking the wrong shape is how people end up paying a monthly subscription for one lease.

This page sets out the differences plainly. Each detailed comparison is linked below.

The three pricing models

Almost every provider in this category uses one of three approaches, and the model matters more than the headline price.

Subscription. A monthly or annual fee for unlimited documents. Rewards regular use, punishes occasional use. The trap is the trial that converts automatically — the most consistent complaint theme across this entire category. If you use it monthly, this is usually the cheapest per document. If you needed one document in March, you may still be paying in September.

Per document. A one-off fee for a single document. Honest and simple, but it adds up quickly, and some providers attach a limited access window rather than permanent access — download and keep your own copy.

Credits. Buy a balance, spend it as needed, nothing renews. This is what IndigoEDocs uses. There is no cancellation deadline because there is nothing to cancel.

The two ways documents get made

Template assembly. You answer a series of questions and clauses are switched on or off based on your answers. Mature, predictable, and reliable within the range the template author anticipated. LawDepot, Legal Templates and most of LegalZoom’s document products work this way.

Generative drafting. You describe the arrangement in ordinary language and the document is composed around what you described. More flexible for situations a template did not foresee, but it requires you to actually read the output rather than trusting it by default. This is what IndigoEDocs does.

Neither is universally better. If your document is standard, predictability wins. If your arrangement is unusual — three partners with unequal contributions, a break clause at an odd point — flexibility wins.

The detailed comparisons

IndigoEDocs vs LegalZoom → The broadest competitor. Formation, filings and attorney services alongside documents. Read this if you are deciding whether you need a legal services firm or just a drafting tool.

IndigoEDocs vs Rocket Lawyer → Subscription with attorney consultations included. Read this if you are weighing a monthly membership against paying per document.

IndigoEDocs vs LawDepot → A large, long-established template library across four countries. Read this if you produce documents steadily all year.

IndigoEDocs vs Legal Templates → US state-specific attorney-drafted templates with bundled PDF tools. Read this if you need American forms regularly.

How to choose without reading all four

Count the documents you expect to need in the next three months.

One or two, no legal questions. Credits or a single per-document purchase. Do not sign up for a subscription.

Several a month. A subscription probably pays for itself. Compare what else is bundled — e-signature, storage, PDF tools — because that is where the value difference sits.

You want a professional involved. Only LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer offer attorney access among these five. Note that a local firm offering a fixed-fee review is often comparable in cost and gives you someone accountable in your own jurisdiction.

You need something filed with a government authority. Company formation, registered agent, trademark. Only LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer do this. No amount of drafting substitutes for a filing.

You are outside the United States. Most of this category is US-first. Check jurisdiction support before paying for anything.

FAQs

Which legal document service is cheapest?

It depends entirely on volume. For one or two documents, credit-based or per-document pricing is cheapest — IndigoEDocs credits start at $5 for 50, with most documents costing 1–3 credits. For frequent year-round use, an annual subscription usually costs less per document.

Do any of these provide legal advice?

LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer offer attorney access on paid plans. IndigoEDocs, LawDepot and Legal Templates are self-service document tools and do not provide legal advice.

Which services use AI?

IndigoEDocs uses generative AI for both drafting and document analysis. Rocket Lawyer applies AI mainly to contract review. LawDepot and Legal Templates use template systems with conditional logic rather than generative AI.

Are AI-generated documents as valid as template-based ones?

Validity depends on the terms, your jurisdiction and proper execution — not on how the document was produced. Neither approach is automatically valid without correct signing formalities.

Why do subscription trials cause so many complaints?

Most require card details up front and convert automatically at the end of a short window, usually seven days. If you only need one document, choose a model with nothing to cancel.

Can I use more than one service?

Yes, and many businesses do — a formation service for filings, and a cheaper drafting tool for the ongoing contracts, NDAs and policies that follow.
